Dear Journal,
I am writing about America. We are striving for the idea to spread from, as people refer "sea to shining sea". Also the idea to make as much money as possible, and to do this, America has to expand our trading route, and try to make alliances with Japan. In all my years, I have never seen this devotion and drive from one country to reach a certain goal. That goal is to gain two territories that will benefit us with trading with Japan. One is in the middle of the ocean it seems like, and the other is the tail end of Canada.
If we become allies with Japan, it will open up the whole Asia continent for trading including, China, Russia, Korea. So in order to achieve this, our Navy pulled up to their cost and asked for permission to trade. Seeing our Navy's power and numbers- how could they not refuse!
The first territory is known as Alaska- funny name. Secretary of State William H. Seward made an agreement between Russia to buy Alaska for 7.2 million dollars. Americans laugh. Seward was made fun of for a long time, because many Americans felt it was a waste of money and time. But Seward wanted to buy Alaska for a long time, and obviously he thought it would be a good investment over time, which it turned out to be. Alaska would increase the population 20% and soon gold was found which brought many people to Alaska. Also, Alaska was close to Japan, and would open up many trade routes also. I have a good feeling about this idea.
Hawaii is the second territory America won. Queen Lili`uokalani, the monarch of Hawaii, stepped down from her throne, to stay clear of bloodshed, and trusting America would take care of Hawaiians. America wanted Hawaii as it had a lot of natural resources including pineapple, and sugar cane. But the biggest reason America wanted Hawaii is it is directly in between America and Japan. Cargo ships cannot make it to Japan in one trip, so they have to dock somewhere and rest up. Hawaii would be the perfect spot to do this.
